SUMMARY REMARKS & TESTBEDS

The aim of the proposed AERO 5G experiments is to enhance the end-user’s tourism experience by integrating Augmented Reality (AR) based elements into the existing functionality of the Discover Places Android application. Specifically, in Phase1 we aim to investigate the feasibility of using the Mapbox API currently used by Discover Places to manage the tourist navigation route, combined with the ViroReact platform to support streaming AR video content from Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) nodes over 5G wireless networks.

AERO 5G intends to use Wi-Fi (802.11a/n and 802.11ax), srsLTE, and OpenStack MEC cloud computing capabilities at the Iris Testbed in Trinity College Dublin to compare tourist user edge connectivity and UE latency across different wireless technologies. We also intend to utilise IMEC’s Virtual Wall facility to host AR streaming content supporting a baseline content delivery scenario over the public Internet. The conclusions derived from experiments performed are expected extend Tara Hill National Park’s knowledge towards developing 5G applications for tourists’ users at popular heritage locations.
