SUMMARY REMARKS & TESTBEDS
Lucy is an IoT & 5G Smart City detector platform for locating things in the city. Currently, it focuses on finding lost dogs. We provide dog owners with a Lucy. PIN that can be attached to a dog’s harness. The pin is equipped with a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacon. When a dog goes missing, the smartphones of people who have installed our free Lucy.APP work like an IoT crowd-searching network. Lucy provides a way for the owners to keep their beloved pets safe and their minds at peace. Before beginning full-scale sales we need to optimize two aspects of the system. The first is the power consumption and the overall QoE of the app, so that using it does not drain the device’s battery and provides a great experience.
In Stage 1 we have run initial tests of BLE scanning and LTE communication in order to be able to detect missing dogs efficiently. Now we want to continue experimentation on both aspects but also focusing on the responsiveness of all app modules. The second aspect is how to scale our event processing backend to provide real-time reaction and notification for high numbers of the app distributed geographically.
In Stage 2 we have tested 3 architecture models with a decentralized event processing architecture, taking advantage of the 5G edge nodes. We got good results for improving the event throughput for dog owners, however the processing throughput for searchers needs still improving. Thanks to the experiments we will have a market-ready solution that will optimize the battery usage of smartphones and a scalable backend to provide real-time sensing. After gathering a network of people who will install our app for securing dogs, we will introduce new products to secure other pets, bikes or even children.
