SUMMARY REMARKS & TESTBEDS

Smart-City deployments are characterized by challenging requirements for scalability, communication efficiency, addressing, reliability and adaptability to dynamic network conditions. In this context, Named Data Networking (NDN) introduces a novel packet naming scheme and in-network caching for efficient data retrieval. In U-MOBILE project, we improved the reliability of NDN through its integration with the Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) paradigm, named NDN-over-DTN (NoD) stack, and demonstrated its suitability to handle intermittent communication.

We argue that the challenging, dynamic network conditions of Smart-Cities can be addressed with a relevant multi-protocol solution, as long as the latter deploys and configures on-demand the most appropriate protocol strategy to each node. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is ideal to provide the missing features of intelligent centralized control and programmability. Here, we target systematic experiments with the REWIRE platform, a relevant SDN-based management solution that improves the adaptability of our previous multi-protocol endeavours, tackling reliability and scalability issues associated with real Smart-City network conditions and IoT application patterns.

We utilize existing SDN control and monitoring features, containerized implementations of Non-IP protocol stacks and anomaly detection mechanisms, as well as the novel Fed4FIRE+ test-beds, enabling realistic Smart-City based experimentation. We plan to deliver: i) a documented open-source version of the above SDN-based solution along with deployment and configuration automations to be implemented for conducting experiments on Fed4FIRE+ testbeds; ii) a relevant demonstration over a federation of w-iLab.t and CityLab test-beds, as well as real data measurements from SmartSantander; iii) experimentation results validating the performance advantages of our solution; and iv) the implementation of concrete open-data management, dissemination & impact plans.
