SUMMARY REMARKS & TESTBEDS
Virtual and Augmented Reality is one of the key driving technologies of the 4th Industrial Revolution, which is expected to transform the way we live and interact with our environment and each other. However, the algorithms making possible the Networked Virtual Environments (NVEs) of today are already reaching their limits, proving unreliable, suffer asynchronies and deployed over an inherently fault-prone network infrastructure.
In this proposal, we aim to evaluate the use of a Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) for efficiently and robustly distributing and sharing objects in an NVE. In particular, we would like to perform an experimental evaluation of a Proof of Concept (PoC) implementation, of a new network architecture that will constitute the basis for large-scale, highly-available, fault-tolerant implementations of multiuser NVE with provable guarantees on the consistency of their networked objects.
We would like to deploy our PoC in a real-time testbed in order to draw conclusions on whether such an approach may be viable in practical applications. The impact of evaluating this novel storage system is tremendous, since it has the potential to transform the way multiuser 3D platforms approach the issue of networking multiple devices, offering new and improved development and management capabilities.
