SUMMARY REMARKS & TESTBEDS
We present CityScan project, a cost-efficient multipurpose mobile sensing platform aimed at addressing the costly and time-consuming problem of valuable portable items being lost or stolen in the urban environment. The CityScan project aims at the development of a novel city-wide discovery service for Bluetooth Smart-based (BLE) items that were reported as missing. To enable cost-efficient city-scale sensing solution a drive-by approach using regular urban vehicles as sensing units is adopted.
The CityScan sensing platform is constituted of multiple vehicle-based mobile units that perform scanning of nearby BLE objects and report information of interest along with the corresponding GPS location to the stationary Gateway nodes by means of low-power Wide-Area Network (LpWAN). The main research and experimental efforts of the project focus on the exploration and development of wireless communication interfaces for mobile scanning sensors. These include optimization of the short-range scanning functionality of nearby BLE objects and exploration of the city-wide communication technologies in a realistic wide-scale urban scenario.
The available Fed4FIRE+ testbed facilities allow us to study and compare various Sub-1 GHz LpWAN protocols for the presented application. The main purpose of the experimental research in this domain is to practically explore and verify an optimal long-range long-power communication solution capable of reliably delivering information of interest from mobile sensor units to gateway nodes in the real-world urban scenario.
