SUMMARY REMARKS & TESTBEDS

STAGE 1

Globally, there is a significant push towards vehicular communication (known as “V2X”) solutions, as a means to improve transport safety, efficiency, end-user experience and environmental performance. This is reflected in the evolution of 4G/Wi-Fi standards, where stakeholders strive to provide V2X solutions based on existing radio technologies (IEEE 802.11p) and more importantly state-of-the-art/emerging ones (LTE-V2X/NR-eV2X). In this landscape, remarkable business opportunities open up for SMEs possessing technological capacity and expertise in the above domains. However, within Fed4Fire+ and other FIRE projects, open ITS experimentation is rather limited to date. Project “FIVE” aims at the experimental evaluation and demonstration of an end-to-end solution prototype for the vehicular communications vertical domain. In the context of FIVE, we plan to integrate our ownV2X software radio modem prototype with NITOS’s higher-layer ITS protocol stack, and eventually demonstrate/validate a complete end-to-end and real-time V2X communication application in real-world conditions. The project will run in two stages. In Stage 1 the end-to-end solution requirements will be specified and an initial evaluation of the higher-layer ITS stack and the radio software implementations will be conducted, whereas in Stage 2 the various required components, interfaces, and adaptations will be developed and the integrated solution will be demonstrated.

STAGE 2

Globally, there is a significant push towards vehicular communications technologies (known as“V2X”), being an integral part of the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) ecosystem, asa means to improve transport safety, efficiency, end-user experience and environmental performance. This is reflected in the evolution of 4G/Wi-Fi standards, where stakeholders strive to provide V2X solutions based on existing radio technologies (IEEE 802.11p) and more importantly state-of-the-art/emerging ones (LTE-V2X/5G-eV2X). In this landscape, remarkable business opportunities open up for SMEs possessing technological capacity and expertise in the above domains. It is also the case that within Fed4Fire+, or in general the FIRE initiative, open ITS experimentation is rather limited to date. Motivated by the above observations, we propose “FIVE”, an experimentation-driven project which: i)aims at the development, the realistic evaluation and demonstration under real-world conditions of an end-to-end solution prototype, and ii)targets to promote and strengthen open experimentation in the V2X/ITS domain. For the former we plan to further extend and integrate our own V2X software radio modem(SDR)prototype with higher-layer ETSI ITS protocol stacks, provided by NITOS and other open-source projects, where as for the latter we intend to contribute to Fed4Fire+software infrastructure, a V2X software modem implementation along with basic configuration and interfacing capabilities. Two types of experimentation deployments are planned. The first will be based on NITOS fixed indoor facility, where we will evaluate the end-to-end prototype in terms of radio and real-time performance, using SDR-equipped nodes. In addition, we plan to use the w-Ilab.t facility, and in particular either the indoor robot nodes or the portable test-bed mounted on vehicles, in order to address more realistically the mobility aspects. The project runs in two stages. Building on a successfully feasibility analysis and initial development work performed in Stage-1, we expect to address all remaining challenges during Stage-2.FIVE in a nutsheel: V2X/ITS prototype based onNITOS and 3rd party open-source ETSI ITS stack implementations integrated with FERON’s V2X SDR modem. Experimentation& Demonstration of the end product in F4Fp NITOS static indoor test-bed, w-Ilab.t indoor mobile test-bed and w-Ilab.t portable-testbed mounted on vehicles.
