SUMMARY REMARKS & TESTBEDS

Thanks to testbeds such as those provided by Fed4FIRE+, researchers can experiment with new networks to provide novel services and applications.
In this proposal we focus on NFV Management and Network Orchestration (MANO) of cloud infrastructures, one of the key enabling technologies for 5G and beyond. We will use Iris testbed tools and facilities to orchestrate a cellular network, so this proposal can be considered as an “Advanced wired networking” experiment.
We will illustrate it with a real use case of Mobile Edge Computing (MEC). Specifically, we will use the Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP) to deploy and perform automated Lifecycle Management (LMC) actions that orchestrate network elements in Core and Edge Clouds when needed. ONAP will receive telemetry of end-to-end communication parameters between users, such as latency, and automatically react in case ranges are unacceptable. In this way, dynamic orchestration will allow placing network elements when and where required, for instance to satisfy Service Level Agreements (SLAs) requirements.
To perform the experiment, we will implement an Edge Cloud, one e-Node-B (eNB) and at least one User Equipment (UE) in Iris virtual machines. Virtualized ONAP and Core Cloud components will be deployed in our lab facilities at University of Vigo (UVIGO) due to their very large computational requirements. ONAP will deploy and orchestrate network elements in Iris virtual machines to obtain the desired QoS for the connected UEs.
Our experiment will showcase the potential of dynamic orchestration of network functions within cloud environments with a real cellular MEC use case, benefitting from the most recent trends in open source technologies. In addition, it will pave the way to a broad set of future 5G experiments that will require resource orchestration, such as the deployment of network slices or the automatic scheduling of services in the limited resources of Edge Clouds.
